Coventry City Advent Calendar - My 25 Favourite Players - Day 16 - Carl Baker

With rumours surfacing for what feels like the 1000th time that Baker is going to return, what better way to celebrate the most recent than to put him as today's instalment to the advent calendar. Along with maybe Michael Doyle, he's the closest thing we've had to a club legend, however that statement may make some slightly older group of fans vomit on the spot when reading it. Emphasis on the phrase "closest thing".

Believe it or not it was actually Chris Coleman whom brought in Bakes all the way back in January 2010 for a fee in and around the sum of £300,000, and he went on to become a fan favourite at the club. This was mainly down to his performances after we got relegated to League One. He was made club captain upon the drop and some might argue he was more suited to this level of football, either way, fans grew to love him.

He was the definition of a goal scoring midfielder and displayed this in our early stages in the third tier, popping up with great finishes here and there. When you want to get promoted you need a player in the midfield who'll get you 10 a season as well as the strikers getting as close to 20 as possible. If it weren't for the various 10 point deductions and off field troubles then we may have potentially achieved it.

I'm not sure what occurred with him and Steven Pressley but his contract was mutually terminated at the start of the 14/15 season and he ended up signing for Milton Keynes Dons not long later. In the same division he displayed the same qualities and guided MK to promotion, picking up their Player of the Season Award on the way. Now aged 34, he did it all again for Portsmouth last season, and we could really do with his presence, so hopefully, this time the rumours are true.
