Coventry City Advent Calendar - My 25 Favourite Players - Day 15 - Romain Vincelot

It still pains me that our side in the 15/16 season never got promoted from League One, and one strong part of it was the midfield. The partnership of John Fleck and Romain Vincelot was a powerhouse in that division, possibly the best. It was such a shame how it ended up, with both in better clubs who had a serious shout of promotion. It's the more elegant bearded member of the pairing whom is the focus of today's advent calendar post.

Even though his spell was short, he still showcase his quality right from the off when he signed from Leyton Orient in 2015, looking like the perfect man to partner Fleck in midfield. Being our first cash buy in almost 2 years, there was pressure as to whether he would live up to the fee paid. He was also a regular in that 1 and only season, starting as a deep lying playmaker who could thread the ball through well and pop up with a goal every now and again.

Arguably he was the catalyst of our 3-2 comeback win against Peterborough on Halloween in 2015, scoring an acrobatic effort from John Fleck's rebounded strike. He may still feel quite aggrieved that the cameras didn't quite catch it as it was an astonishing goal, plus it sparked the side into action, two pieces of Adam Armstrong magic later and we gained 3 vital points. It's hard to forget how good we were given how we matched it in the second half of the campaign.

It still angers me to this today that Tony Mowbray sold him to Bradford a year later when he didn't really want to go or force the move in any way. At that point he was all we had in terms of composure and experience, and then he was sold, replaced by Gael Bigirimana and the money was used for Jordan Turnbull. Now as we saw yesterday, I really liked Bigi, but he wasn't what was going to keep us up. Leadership material was, and he offered just that, ask Bradford fans what they think of their captain and they'll tell you the whole story.
